Exploring Feminist Workshops, Camps And Related Events

By Donna Kennedy

When it comes to conferences, college, conventions and festivals, there are often a number of activities. In some cases, this includes feminist workshops. For example, there are a number of colleges and universities which host Feminist Theory Workshops on an annual basis.

In many cases, these workshops focus on equal work for equal pay, anti-discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual orientation and civil rights. Whereas, there are also feminist speakers which enlighten others by speaking at a number of LGBTQ+ parades and rallies around the world. Most often, those speaking at these events have a more receptive audience than other locations, such as in the workplace.

Recently, individuals and companies have been providing these workshops either on-site or at a conference center. Two companies offering these workshops are Soapbox and Ambivalently Yours, both of which are woman owned and operated. As such, the focus of workshops provided tend to lean toward feminism and feminist theory.

Beyond workshops, camps focusing on these issues have also become popular over the last several years. For, women often enjoy being able to relax and enjoy the company of others of like-mind and talents. As such, these camps are now being offered in different areas throughout the year.

It should be noted that a camp is nothing like a conference, convention, festival or retreat. In most cases, these events provide a front-row seat to an overview of history and work in this area. While this is the case, most are still developed so that those in attendance can participate in a number of different learning activities while exploring more about issues related to women.

Most all of these events teach about the history of the feminist and women's liberation movement of the 1960s. As such, those in attendance often get a great deal of insight as to how far women have come in the last century. While this is the case, the world is at a point where women and others are once again fighting for civil and equal rights.

At most camps, popular feminists offer keynote speeches which can often inspire and motivate women to become involved in the movement. Whether creating art, working for a non-profit or volunteering time, all are important areas in which women can become involved. In addition, for those whom have the ability to do so, working on a rape crisis hotline, or at a shelter are areas in which there is often a high demand for paid staff and volunteers.

Whether attending a rally convention, conference, festival or workshop, connections made at these events can often last a lifetime. As such, it is not the length of the event which matters but rather the connections made with others while in attendance. For, when working with others of like-mind and interests, women are often more successful when it comes overcoming a number of issues.
