Three Ways to Relax, De-stress and Create Balance Your Life

By Chelsea Grace

When your life appears beyond control and you have never-ending demands tugging at you from all directions, it's easy to feel overpowered, fatigued - and just plain stressed. Believe it or not, balancing your life doesn't require large changes. You do not have to quit your job, desert your family and escape to a remote retreat so as to feel calm and happy. Actually true balance is something that starts inside you first and foremost - irrespective of what else is occurring in your outer life circumstances.

Below you will find 3 straightforward paths to begin building a greater sense of inner peace and harmony:

1) Quiet time.

One of the first things we tend to sacrifice when we're busy is our personal time. Instead we give all of our energy and attention to caring for others, multitasking, meeting responsibilities and "being productive." Over a period this depletes our energy and we start to feel more burdened by our responsibilities.

To live a rather more balanced life, quiet time to you is vital. You will believe that you don't have any time available for yourself, but something dazzling occurs when you solidly make time; you find yourself feeling happier and more active, your focus improves - and you still get lots done. Just a few minutes spent sitting noiselessly in meditation or reading a book can perform miracles in transforming stress into peace and happiness.

2) Self-care.

Beyond making time for things you like, there are more paths to nurture and love yourself on a regular basis. Getting a full 8 hours in bed (or as much as you personally need) is an excellent start, as well as eating nutritious food, exercising daily and talking kindly to oneself.

Have you ever noticed that when you're actually beat or stressed, even the littlest problem can seem like a nightmare? On the other hand, when you are feeling well-rested and centered, you are far better in a position to handle upsets. Caring for yourself is one sure way to habitually replace your energy, inner peace and joy - that means you will have the strength to handle whatever comes your way.

3) Flexibleness.

Were you aware that one of the most important factors behind stress is stiff expectations ? We all do it occasionally; get a psychological picture of how our lives "should be" - and get extremely annoyed when our outer circumstances don't cooperate. One of the most important gifts you can give yourself is a flexible state of mind. Put simply, learn the way to detach from excessive expectations and go along with the flow.

When you have a flexible mind-set, you're able to address crises and Problems much more easily because you're not working against a predetermined concept of how things "should be". You're able to tap into your creative problem-solving talents and move through challenges without all the drama and disappointment. Be like the tree that bends with the breeze - and you're far less likely to break.

These inner changes can make a dramatic difference in your state of contentment, but you might also want to look at your outer life circumstances and see if there are more tiny changes you can make to help to support your interior work.

For instance, you might opt to let go of certain obligations that are not significant or delightful to you. Just because you agreed to host weekly conferences for a support group 3 years ago does not suggest that you have to keep doing it forever - particularly if it's become a drain on your time and energy. Be willing to let go of activities that no longer enhance the way of life you desire, and you'll create space for greater fulfillment, joy and peace.
