There are many reasons why an adult will find themselves sitting opposite a trauma therapist. You don't have to be constantly abused all of your childhood to go to this type of therapy. There are children who have been bullied, ridiculed, abandoned, or being brought up in a dysfunctional home. Therapists often turn to inner child healing techniques.

Many people think that they have received the odd punishment by aunts or uncles. They may have been exposed to pornography or voyeurism. Punishment can include violence, such as the pulling of hair, shaking and punching. Kids whose parents have divorced will struggle in years to come.

This promotes fear and panic in their lives. It is the youngster who is still affected and this is why the adult is still fearful about various situations in their lives. A whole host of disorders and issues come up as a result. This can include anxiety, depression, panic disorders, addictions and withdrawal. One may walk around with a lot of anger because they don't deal with the child within.

This often comes down to the inner child who is still struggling with the trauma which happened when they were young and vulnerable. Memories of this time in their lives will be so visceral. A person will find that their daily lives are affected because the fears take over, especially when they are triggered by something. However, when you make a connection, the trauma is less evident. It means that you begin to love yourself and you are more compassionate towards yourself.

It can feel strange or uncomfortable talking to your inner child at first. The therapist may encourage their clients to write them a letter or to draw a picture. The creative process begins to take off. During this time, you will go back to your childhood and often become more childlike in nature. You will begin to look at the pictures of your childhood which helps you to see the changes over time.

If the client wants to take this further, they can go through pictures of themselves as a child. This is very helpful because you may remember some of these photos and you will remember what you were feeling at the time. You can now change this as you begin to talk to the child. You realize you have been through a lot of heartache.

However, it is not impossible to heal from this. It may be traumatic going back in time and looking at these photos of yourself. You may see family pictures which can seem false to you. It will bring out negative feelings, but this is part of the process, and this is not a bad thing at all. One needs to go through all types of stages in order to complete the process.

You also need to interact with the child, getting to know more about him or her. This will include finding out about what he or she likes to do. The inner child may enjoy reading, for example. Go back in time and pick out their favourite book. This will help you to connect with him or her once again.
