Newly Published Christian Books For Spiritual Growth

By Amanda Baird

Pray for wisdom and understanding before reading newly published Christian books. Find truth by following the instructions of 1 Thessalonians 5:21 to "Test all things; hold fast what is good". Look up the scriptures quoted in your reading materials, read preceding and following verses to be sure you understand the context, and read related scriptures. Learning about the church, spirituality, truth, morality, history, and life stories of other believers, keeps readers on the path to spiritual growth and a meaningful faith walk. Reading serves to educate, inspire, and encourage.

The best selling book of all time is the Holy Bible. It's published in several different translations but all translations start with ancient scrolls in Greek and Hebrew. Most Bibles printed today include study guides and topical articles. Students will also find in-depth study aids written for every book of the Bible.

Fiction is a great way to really feel and understand a story and its characters. Historical fiction writers have researched the history and settings of the time, to recreate biblical stories and historical characters. They add possible dialogue and private thoughts to bring the story and characters alive. Other fiction writers create fictional characters and settings that recreate moral and relational conflicts familiar to the reader. An allegory is a modern day parable using people or events to dramatize a hidden meaning.

New believers will want to read and understand the Bible. Look for study materials that are summaries of the various books of the bible and their underlying themes. Stories about truth and the moral decisions facing Christians in everyday life will educate, and encourage all Christians as they attempt to live out their faith in a fallen world. Biographies and inspirational stories will help you develop a faith walk that survives troubled times. Take a walk through history to explore biblical times and the growth and survival of the church through the ages.

Devotionals, collections of readings expounding on biblical verses, help believers grow closer in their relationship with God. Reading passages and praying is a great starting point for family devotions. Devotionals are a great way to start the day, to gather the family together for prayer time, or to wind down and focus on what's important at the end of the day.

Look for books in the theology section if you want an in-depth understanding of God and God's relationship and interaction with the world. Believers are told "to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you." (1 Peter 3:15). To present a reasoned defense of your faith, look for books on apologetics.

Newly published Christian books can be found at bookstores and retail outlets, large and small, Christian and secular. They're also available at many online wholesale and retail outlets. Many churches have lending libraries, as does most every town and city.

How do you choose which newly published Christian books to read first? A good starting place is a church study group. Christian magazines and newsletters will have reviews, recommendations, and advertisements for reading materials. Or start with a book written by your favorite pastor, teacher, TV or radio evangelist. Look online for lists of top sellers. Newly published works are often advertised and displayed prominently in larger bookstores.
