The Causes And Effects Of Vanishing Twin Syndrome

By Sharon Kelly

Pregnancies are always quite complicated, especially if there are twins involved in its birth. One of the complications that may happen during the birth of twins is known as vanishing twin syndrome. Here are a few things to know about this phenomenon such as the causes of it and the effects it may have on the babies and the mother.

Now, one may think that this is some kind of supernatural phenomenon by the name alone. But actually, it is just a case wherein one of the twins suffered an early miscarriage and somehow gave the placenta and the fetal tissue to be absorbed by the surviving one. It is that reason as to why there is no trace of the other baby when this incident occurs.

As per majority of pregnancies, this would usually happen during the first pregnancy and can be spotted through an ultrasound and several follow up ultrasounds. The first ultrasound will confirm whether the mother has twins or not. Through follow up ultrasounds, the mother will then be able to know if both twins are still there or if one disappeared.

Just to give more idea about this condition, it usually happens in approximately twenty eight percent of pregnant women. As mentioned already, it happens usually during the first trimester of the pregnancy. Because of that, there are actually some mothers who are not aware of it until checked by ultrasound.

Unfortunately, the cause for this sort of incident is still unknown or cannot be concluded. There have been a few studies that have linked this condition with abnormalities found in the chromosomes of the vanished twin. Other than that, there have been no conclusive evidence that would state the true cause or causes of this condition.

If this does happen sometime during the first trimester of pregnancy, then mothers do not need to worry about any complications since the babies are still very small. At most, she would experience some symptoms like bleeding, cramps and some pelvic pain which may prompt the doctor to give some light medication to treat these symptoms. As mentioned above, some mothers are not even aware of having this sort of condition until the ultrasound confirms it.

This is not the cause for pregnancies wherein this syndrome occurs during the later part of the pregnancy though. If ever this happens sometime during the second or third trimester, the doctors would usually treat it as a high risk pregnancies because of possible complications. One of the complications would be an increase in the risk of cerebral palsy for the surviving child.

The key to lessening the chances of such complications would be an early detection and preparation which would lead to the complications. If one has already detected some of the symptoms that were mentioned above, then she should already start consulting her doctor in preparation to what can be done. By having more awareness that such a condition exists, it is possible to know the best course of action for preventing harsh complications due to it.
