How To Learn Transcendental Meditation

By Zeynel Bakema

Meditation is to relax ones mind and body. To be in state of restful alertness or restful awareness without falling asleep. The mind remains alert and awake during this restfulness and no loss of consciousness as during sleep. It helps to clarify the mind, improve health and freedom from tension, anxiety and stress.

There are many forms of meditation but the most profound is TM technique. TM stand for Transcendental Meditation. The program changes the quality of life from poverty, emptiness and suffering to abundance, fulfillment and happiness.

Concentration-In a concentration technique for self development a person might be asked to focus on a candle, to eliminate all thoughts, to visualize something or to focus on a particular thought, part of the body etc. Then, whenever the mind wanders from the candle or the visualization etc. the concentration technique requires that we bring our attention back to the point or topic of focus i.e. candle etc. The TM technique however, is unique and different in that it does not involve any concentration or focus. Transcendental Meditation is a completely effortless technique in which the mind flows naturally and purposefully to the field of creative silence (or Pure Consciousness) at the source of the mind. This happens spontaneously and naturally, with out effort, when one practices the Transcendental Meditation technique.Breathing-Many meditation techniques focus on the rhythm of the breath. The TM technique does not focus on the breath or its rhythm. Instead TM utilizes the minds own natural tendency to move towards greater peace and silence within in the same way that gravity causes a stone to sink through the water in a pond. In this same way, the mind is spontaneously and naturally drawn deep inside during the TM practice, independent of what may be going on with the breath.

TM technique works automatically spontaneously and effortlessly according to the law of nature. It make use of the natural tendency of the mind to move forward a field of greater charm and the natural mechanisms of the body to neutralize stress and restore balance in its functioning. It makes the mind orderly, gives the body deep rest and improves coordination between the two which means clear awareness to focus sharply and succeed in activity.

Regular practice of TM taps the field of energy within ourselves to enhance our lives. We tap the source of intelligence and daily we are more intelligent. We tap the source of energy and daily we are more energetic. We tap the source of creativity and daily we are more creative. This process by which one contacts the source of pure creative intelligence(C.I.) at the basis of the thinking process, allowing C.I. to be expressed in greater clarity of the mind, greater efficiency of action and increasingly fulfill achievements in daily life.

People might tell you this is cheating, that meditation requires a lot of effort and years of practice. This is bull. People who tell you this are scared of change, and they usually have their egos attached to meditation. To reach the deepest levels of meditation you have to be willing to try new methods and techniques until you find one that is right for you. We've found that after using these audio programs for three weeks (in the morning and before going to sleep) we've been able to slow down and analyze our thoughts on a regular basis. This means we can now begin to change the thoughts we have to the ones we want to have. This will be the basis for our next article, but for now you should have an idea of what you have to start working on. Here's what you have to do:

Download or purchase an audio program that claims to help your meditation. Experiment for yourself until you've found one you're comfortable with.Start using one of these audio programs both in the morning and before going to sleep. Mark down on a calendar when you began your practice.Be consistent in your practice for at least three weeks. Also, take note of how much money your bankroll has increased or decreased by in that three week period. After three weeks, write down the negative thoughts you most often have Write down the thoughts you'd like to replace them with.

Then all you have to do is wait for our next article, and we'll get started on changing those thought patterns. The 1990's were a time of yuppies, day-traders and twenty something stock brokers. Any young upstart with a fresh idea and a borrowed suit could get investor cash for his or her dot-com, get-rich-quick, scheme. During that time, I saw my peers judging one another primarily by the car they drove, the watch they wore and how hot their dates looked. The power of so much money, so easily obtained, was intoxicating, and many of my generation began to identify themselves solely by their possessions. They placed almost no value on personal fulfillment despite their chronic lack of inner happiness.Instead they developed a dangerous routine of long work weeks and late night parties which often included drugs and alcohol. As for me, I had a different agenda.

The results were quite remarkable".Andy and Daryl Schoenbach's daughter was diagnosed with ADHD in second grade. Like most ADHD children she was taking medication. "The medication helped but had mixed results-she still lost focus, had meltdowns, and the medications affected her sleep and appetite," said Andy, who lives with Daryl in Washington D.C. "She was not performing close to her potential and we didn't see the situation improving. So at the end of seventh grade when her doctor recommended increasing the medication, we decided it was time to take a different course-stopping the medication and using Transcendental Meditation." The results were quite remarkable," Daryl said. "The twice daily meditations smoothed things out, gave her perspective, and enabled her to be in greater control of her own life when things started falling apart. It took some time, but it gradually changed the way she handled crises and enabled her to feel confident that she could take on greater challenges -in her own words, 'climb a mountain.'"

Unlike my friends, I like being quiet. I don't mind being alone and don't need to surround myself with constant activity. As I continue my practice of Transcendental Meditation I realize that I have been given an invaluable tool for self-fulfillment: a gift I could never pay for in dollars and cents. The Transcendental Meditation technique really works. Almost everyone has heard about it, and almost everyone knows someone who practices it. Most people know that it brings results and benefits that are scientifically validated. Yet those same people, many of whom are willing to throw money after anything, complain that spending $2000 to learn Transcendental Meditation is just too expensive.

To them I say "As a matter of fact, you aren't exactly paying for it," This amount of money, as significant as it may be to many of us, will help support a world wide non profit organization, but does not provide a measure of the value of this technique. Because in truth, no amount of money can equal what Transcendental Meditation gives to us. The cost of learning the Transcendental Mediation technique is less than the cost of a one-week cruise or a family trip to Disney World. And no price can be placed on one's inner stability, happiness and the benefits that the Transcendental Meditation technique gives us.

It is interesting to note that adherents from all religions choose to learn transcendental meditation. Although it has roots in Hinduism, the transcendental meditation technique can be applied to any cultural context. In fact, those who learn transcendental meditation are encouraged to adapt symbols that have meaning and depth for the individual. For example, a rabbi may choose to focus on a symbol or image rooted in Judaism to enhance the effectiveness of the session. In contrast, an agnostic may choose an image from nature such as a beautiful meadow or sunset to achieve relaxation. The beauty of transcendental meditation is its flexibility.
